Environmental Photography

Larry Clark
he uses irony and symbolism, in the first picture there's this man with a gun sitting in front of an american flag. americans are seen as notorious in their love for weapons. in the second there are people shooting heroin which was prime subject matter for him but, in the background there are some family photos and most importantly a big painting of "jesus".

EJ Bellocq
he does a lot of nude portraiture but as it pertains to environmental photography, it's more important what he choses to pose his models on and wear. in this photo, she's on a chaise but the chaise is blocking s door. this might suggest shame, a desire for privacy, or the subject matter being taboo.

Andrew Miksys
he has different series but in this one with people on this bus, the photos, they give you the feeling of being on the outside looking in. it kind of distances you from the people in the photographs. mabye he's suggesting that we are distanced from these people because of social class, background, etc. the frosted glass makes the images obscure.

what i like about all of these is that the environment in these images determines the mood and what you perceive about the subjects. they're more of a generalization because they show you the "types" of people who would be in these environments. they tell you about the subjects and the photographer.
